We were looking for a great outdoor activity in Central Florida that was more nature than theme park and WE GOT IT! We (family of four - 2 girls 11 & 8) took a trail ride with the P3 guides at the park and it was AWESOME! Our girls got to lead their horses independently under incredible guidance of the guides Arden and Cory. The horses were healthy and seemed excited to make the loop around bear lake. We tromped through established trails and through large puddles of recent rain water all while enjoying the native plants and wildlife. Our guides shared their knowledge of the park and made us feel like part of the family! Wonderful experience!
If you like to hike there are plenty of trails here to explore. Some are maintained with more emphasis on equestrian than human travel but they are all well marked and easy to follow. They also offer kayak and canoe rentals on several of the lakes for a really reasonable price ($20 for 2 hours + $11 for each additional hour). There is also a beach area, that I have yet to visit, on the shore of Lake Louisa if you want to get some swimming in.
The Mrs. and I do a fair amount of local camping and we spent a weekend there hiking the trails and just enjoying the outdoors. It is north of the Green Swamp and it is immaculate. There was a great weekend camping crowd. Besides the namesake lake there a number of other small lakes on the property. One can swim, picnic, do some horeseback riding, hiking, fishing, and canoeing. Its a lovely place to get away from it all and not far from a number of great attractions in Central Florida.
This was my first visit and it won't be my last. The park rangers are very nice and answered all my questions. I was there to do some hiking and I decided on the Big Creek Loop and the Nature trail. Butterflies, gopher tortoises, red shouldered hawks flying above me the whole time!! I also saw a purple passion flower for the first time!! I can't wait to go back!!
Great state park! Beautiful grounds, friendly staff. Well marked trails and lots of them! You can also rent lots of stuff for either a day trip or a longer stay.. they have canoes, kayaks, cabins for rent or campsites if you feel like tenting it highly recommended
